Drug addicts often deny that they have an addiction and usually downplay the harmful consequences of their drug abuse. The first step in any drug addiction treatment program is to get the addict into treatment. Then it is possible to help them get past their denial so that they can make an effort to change.
Some addicts will require a medical detoxification before the actual addiction treatment program begins. This is dependent on the substance or substances of abuse, the length of time using, age, general health, and other factors. It is critical that the addict be completely honest about all substances being used so the initial assessment plans for the appropriate level of detox. Then the addiction treatment process begins.
