Heroin Addiction

Heroin or diamorphine is a synthesized opioid analgesic, once declining in use and now one of the most popular drugs in the United States. While illegal outside of medical use, the drug is popular for recreation and is frequently purchased as a cheaper alternative to pain pills and prescription medication. Users either start using heroin recreationally or switch to heroin after becoming hooked on pain pills, and are quickly addicted to the much more dangerous drug. Unfortunately, heroin is produced with no medical regulation, and quality and strength vary a great deal. Users are prone to overdose, exposure to dangerous chemicals, and worse symptoms of drug abuse than with regulated opiates.

Dangers of Abuse

Heroin is an extremely strong opioid and it is responsible for tens of thousands of deaths every year. Dangerous on its own, heroin is often cut with strychnine, injected in non-sterile conditions, and used in environments where needle-sharing and blood-borne pathogens are rampant. Heroin abusers are at risk, not only of overdose, but also of contracting Hepatitis C and HIV, strychnine poisoning, and life-threatening bacterial infections. At the same time, quitting is difficult to impossible on your own. Most users experience strong withdrawal symptoms, including emotional blunting, anxiety, extreme depression, nausea and vomiting, and flu-like symptoms. For those unable to go to the hospital, these symptoms can be life threatening.

Detoxing Safely with Medical Supervision

Detoxing doesn’t have to be painful and it doesn’t have to be dangerous. At Laguna Trails, we can offer medical supervision, prescriptions for withdrawal drugs such as methadone and buprenorphine, and a safe place to withdraw. Once you’ve made it through the physical symptoms of detox, we will create a custom recovery plan following a psychological assessment, designed to help you tackle the unique aspects of your addiction.

Don’t let painful withdrawal symptoms, anxiety, and your mental health stop you from recovering. Let the clinical team at Laguna Trails Recovery help. We recognize that you will have unique challenges, and we’re here to help you make it past them. Contact us today at 877-447-4977.
